The future is still in plastics, but today Mr. McGuire would probably whisper, "bioplastics." Based on increases in the price of crude oil, from which most plastics are derived, and consumer interest in just about anything "green," the timing is ideal for a surge in this next generation of plastics. The European Bioplastics trade group predicted annual capacity would more than triple to 1.5 million tons by 2011. BCC Research forecasts the global market for biodegradable polymers to grow at a compound average growth rate of more than 17 percent through 2012. Even so, bioplastics will encompass a small niche of the overall plastic market, which is forecast to reach 500 billion pounds globally by 2010.
The Case for Bioplastics
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, only 6 percent of the plastic made in the United States was recycled in 2005. (That compares to a 50 percent recycling rate for paper, 37 percent for metals, and 22 percent for glass.) The plastic that lands in landfills has a life measured in thousands of years. Because most bioplastics are produced from agriculturally based renewable resources, under the right conditions they are biodegradable and compostable. The environment-friendly aspect of bio-based plastics appeals to companies looking for non-toxic containers that do not leach questionable chemicals, and that return to nature harmlessly after being disposed.
In addition, U.S. consumers get over 100 billion polyethylene carrier bags each year, but only 1.2 percent are recycled. Reusablebags.com estimates up to 1 trillion plastic bags are given out to consumers worldwide. It may be less expensive for retailers to hand out a paper or a polyethylene bag, but the environmental cost of bioplastic bags is less in terms of disposal. Consumers like the lightweight plastic bags and tend to find other uses for them before eventually throwing them away. Very few people bring them back to the store, which explains the miniscule recycling rate. Replacing polyethylene bags with bioplastic would be environmentally safer.
Banned in San Francisco-and Even in China
In San Francisco, petroleum-based bags are banned from supermarkets and drug stores. Other communities both in the U.S. and internationally have taken note and are either initiating fees or outright bans on petroleum-based plastic shopping bags. In January, China's State Council banned the production of plastic bags, and beginning June 1, shops, supermarkets, and sales outlets nationwide are barred from handing them out.
In Ireland, government officials passed a tax on plastic shopping bags back in 2002. When customers started getting hit with the 33 cent fee on each and every plastic shopping bag, usage switched within a matter of weeks to reusable cloth bags or backpacks. Consumer behavior was changed and carrying a plastic shopping bag was akin to wearing fur or smoking in a crowded room; in a matter of a few years the behavior became socially unacceptable.
California has also banned chemicals called phthalates, found in soft plastics, from toys and baby products. Research into Bisphenol-A (BpA), used to make polycarbonates, shows that the compound mimics the human hormone estrogen and has been found to stimulate certain types of cancer, cause genetic damage, and leach out of plastic bottles into food and beverages.
Safer alternatives are starting to appear. Bioplastics are showing up in not only food packaging but in the automotive industry, medical devices, as hardware for the computer and electronics industry, on-the-go disposables (cups, plates, cutlery), and in toys.
Engineering Bioplastics for Expanded Uses
Typically thought of as coming from corn, bioplastics can and are being produced from other plant-based feedstocks such as potatoes, sugar beets, sugar cane, cassava, wheat, tapioca, and oils from soybeans. Companies have produced hybrid bioplastic products that incorporate a blend of plant starch with conventional polymers that help manufacturers reduce their dependence on nonrenewable resources and add features such as heat resistance or durability to their products but they cannot claim to be fully biodegradable or compostable.
As the technology continues to evolve, bioplastics will be engineered with the heat-resistance and strength needed for wider use. For example, Metabolix, a Massachusetts company, has developed a biodegradable polymer called Mirel made from bacteria, corn, and air that is able to withstand boiling water.
Innovative companies will be looking at their raw materials, have their finger on the pulse of what is driving consumer demand, and will be assessing the possible health risks of conventional plastics. They will also be keeping an eye out for new technologies or feedstock materials that will help solve some of the early challenges associated with bioplastics as they move from niche industry to the mainstream. Take Cereplast for example. The company now makes 15 grades of resins in its Compostables line, including a heat-resistant product CP-TH-6000 that can withstand heat up to 155p F. It also has a hybrid resin that is heat resistant up to 250p. To meet the demands for bioplastics Cereplast announced that it is building a new manufacturing facility in Indiana. It will have a half-billion pound capacity when fully operational in 2010.
Completing the Bio-Cycle
In the future, bioplastic products might be recycled into biodiesel. Researchers at Polytechnic University in New York have developed a fuel-latent plastic that is tougher and more durable than standard polyethylene. After use, the product can be placed in a simple converter where enzymes break it down into biodiesel suitable for home heating fuel. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) awarded the university's researchers $2.34 million to advance the technology and transfer it to industry. The military has shown interest in their discovery for use on the battlefield where it could generate its own fuel and dispose of waste at the same time.
Any company planning to jump on the bioplastic bandwagon by either producing the resin or converting products to a plant-based alternative needs to stay abreast of what is happening in the biofuels arena, too. Bioplastics might be the darlings of the bio-based products industry right now, but it will compete for resources with biofuel producers for limited resources. That could result in higher feedstock prices, which could adversely impact the economics of both industries. In addition, while bioplastics are perceived as environmentally friendly, environmental groups are raising questions about diverting food crop resources to industrial uses. Certain feedstocks, such as corn, are more heavily dependent on agrochemicals and water than others and environmentalists are concerned excess or irresponsible use could impact our environment. They also worry that millions of acres of savannah and rainforest will be lost to make way for bio-crops. This complicated environmental equation could alter the dynamics dramatically.

Konami announced that it will be publishing the game Rock Revolution for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and the DS. Rock Revolution is set to release in October.
Konami the makers off the DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) series have a lot of experience with music and rhythm games so you can expect Rock Revolution to have some unique features.
One of the major things Konami is pushing is that the game is made by musicians and will feature "the most realistic drum peripheral on the market". They weren't kidding either, this drum set has 7 inputs on it, 6 pads and a kick pedal. So if you felt intimidated by Rock Bands drum set, this should really make you wet your pants. At the same time, those looking for a greater challenge or people who play real drums might appreciate all the detail put into the drumset and game.
Another interesting detail about Rock Revolution is that the game has guitars and drums, but no vocals. This is good news because it means you wont mess up on guitar or drums when laughing at your friend trying to sing one of many impossible songs.
One strange thing about Rock Revolution is the difference between versions, the DS and for some reason the Wii version will not have online play, and will not use a Drum set or Guitar. The Wii version will have "Air Guitar" and "Air Drum" type play and on a side note the DS version does include vocals. Confused yet?

All in all Rock Revolution should be a great addition to the musical instrument genre. It will be interesting to see if Konami can pull it off this time, after their previous attempt with the game "Guitar Freaks" (the real first guitar game made in 1999), remember that? Probably not... It never quite made it to the U.S.
To me, all of this competition is a good thing; it will keep gaming companies from quickly publishing the same game over and over as a 2, 3 and 4 just for money. Also it should cause them to innovate more just to keep their fan base from going to the other musical instrument games.
Now if only we could get all of these companies, Konami, Activision, and Harmonix to agree on a standard for the back end of their controller software so all guitar controllers would work with all games, etc. we'd be set. Of course when new games introduce new equipment, like a drum set with 7 buttons instead of 4, it's hard to see how they will ever reach some kind of standard.

I can level any horde race and class to 70 in no time at all. I wouldn't have even imagined saying that a year ago. I used to struggle in World of Warcraft. I was grinding to get to the next level, not knowing where the next quests were, and just plain not having fun. So I looked around on the web for some horde leveling guides. I tried some tips and tricks that I found but I considered myself a decent gamer and already knew most of the areas and tips I was given.
My guild mates and friends always would tell me to keep on the grind and Id soon join them at 60... I told them I just wasn't having fun anymore and that I was seriously considering stopping playing. One of the top guild elite members PM'd me. I did not even know this guy in real life and hadn't really talked to him before. He told me about this certain guide he had found and that was how he had leveled all his alts up to 60 and now 70.
So I went and looked for this guide and gave it a try. Why not, I loved the game when I started and wanted to join my friends at the max level. The guide was great! It made the game fun again. No longer was I wandering around searching for random quests. I got the enjoyment of leveling my character up by myself and not missing out on game content.
Some people actually pay for their character to be leveled by someone else. They miss out on the whole WoW game experience! I had my 30 tauren warrior get up to 60 in 3 days 1 hour playing time! My friends thought I was hacking! Ha ha... I went from being the "guy who everyone had to help out" to the guy who helped them when they were in trouble.
These days I help my guild out sometimes with their characters and I personally own a 70 of every race for my horde guild. Life on the Warcraft battlefield is good, wouldn't you say? Windows XP has lots of colours, themes and similar special effects to make your PC look great. These effects slow down your PC and that is the main problem.
If your computer is running slow, and you are sure you do not have a virus, spyware or adware, you may try using some of these Win XP tweaks. The more special effects you remove the better.
Some of the effects that slow your PC are:
1. Pictures on the desktop background. A blank wallpaper is the best. Animations or even sounds in the background slow PC even more. Remove Shortcuts on the Desktop. This will be described further below as well.
Right click on My Computer icon and select properties. Go to Advanced Tab, and select Settings next to Performance. Finally select Adjust for best performance. Click OK twice. That is one of the best Win XP tweaks.
2. Is your browser by default plain, or did you install many extensions, themes and cursor symbols? Those slow down speed, so removing them is the best solution if you have a slow PC.
Switch to Windows Classic Theme by right clicking on Desktop and go to Properties.
3. Sounds also cause speed problems, so removing them is another good tweak. These include also startup and shutdown sounds. Remove sounds from your control panel. Double click on the Sounds icon.
4. A lot of MsWord, Notepad, Image and similar files scattered around on your desktop or located in shortcuts can be removed or arranged.
Create new folders, and organise your files. A folder for MsWord documents, images, sounds and Notepad files so you do not waste space.
Shortcuts on your desktop, in start menu and anywhere else can be removed to tweak XP. These are unwanted and are safe to be removed. You know if an icon is a shortcut or not because once you click delete you can read:
"Are you sure you want to delete this shortcut?"
5. Use the search tool to find unwanted files. WIn XP search tool allows you to search for certain file types. For example you can search for only images .gif or .jpg. You can find all the images on your PC, and remove all the unwanted image files.
Same with sound files, documents and you will be amazed about this stuff that has piled up during the years. A brand new computer does not need to search for these files.
Be careful though when using this tweak. Do not remove files you are not sure what their use is. Some files may be system files useful for your PC to work well.
Doing so can damage your PC.
6. Bookmarks or favorites inside your web browser have their negative side too. Same with cookies, cache and browser history.
Remove unwanted sites from your favorites. In Internet Explorer remove cache, cookies and history by selecting Tools, Internet Options and clicking the desired action.
In other browsers these options can also be tweaked from the menu which is usually under Tools. Remove these unwanted files often, or weekly. A weekly or more often job is clearing your recycle bin which helps cleaning wasted space.
Those 6 tweaks will organise your PC for a faster performance. It is the basic for XP users who suffer from slow speed. Even if your PC is not slow, some of the tweaks are still useful in the long run.

It's a strange word, and one you may have only come across either within gaming community forums or in game publications, but what exactly is a MMORPG? To break this acronym down into meaningful words, a MMORPG is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. To the uninitiated, that means about as much as the acronym, so let's break it down further to try to understand exactly what this is.
There are many different types and variations of computer games and video games available today, many of which have inherited their categories and genres from some of the earliest computer games first developed in the 70s and 80s. Some of these computer games involved playing a sports game against the computer, or completing certain puzzles or challenges, but some of the games make you take on the role of a character within the game, often with your character depicted on the screen.
Usually this involves you maneuvering your character about, interacting with the environment and with other characters in the game. These types of games have become extremely popular as they allow the player to be fully immersed within the game making it seem as though they are someone else. These games have been referred to as RPG, or Role Playing Games, simply because the player takes on a role within the game.
With the growing developments in internet and network technology, and with greater bandwidth and speed being available to a greater number of players, many computer games have allowed players to play against other people using the internet. In this way, one player in the UK can quite happily play against someone sitting in New Zealand, with no delay between their movements and actions - everything happens immediately for both players.
This adds a whole new dimension to game play, as humans provide two aspects that a computer can't really provide effectively. The first is unpredictability. Although computers can try to replicate this, it is never genuinely unpredictable. A computer is programmed to be unpredictable, but the level and nature of the unpredictability is, naturally, pre-programmed, meaning that eventually the unpredictability is predictable. He however does convince them of their relationship, after which he plows everything for them without the aid of horses, and then carries the horse's home. The son asks his father for a staff, and his father then tries his best to provide one, however the young giant breaks each staff given to him by his father. Realizing that his father can no longer provide for him the young giant leaves home.
It is interesting to note that when he was a thumbling all he wanted to do was help his father, when he grew he did great work for a brief period but left his parents as they could no longer help him. Certainly in order for the Age of Exploration and the Industrial Era's to occur children did have to start leaving their parents in mass rather then staying at home to help them. As one might anticipate from such an event the young giant goes to find a smith, offering to work for the smith in return for the right to hit him. The smith being greedy agrees to these terms. The new Call of Duty 4 map packs are totally awesome. Infinity Ward has out done themselves in the quality and the detail in the new maps. Call of Duty 4 is the game of the year. The new maps are much larger and the graphics are state of the art.
Creek is by far the most popular map for snipers you will find one hiding behind every boulder and tree. The map is divided in half by a rugged ravine with waterfall and creek running through the middle. A cave allows for a quick pass-through, but watch poking your head out as a sniper is always waiting for you. The map features many farm houses and one with a large deck overlooking the creek. Exceptional detail down to spider webs in the cave and under the wood deck. In the center of the map you will even find a campfire with your dinner and a pot of coffee waiting for you. In parts of the map you can even hear the crickets.
Chinatown the moonlight offers dim lighting which is brightened by the streetlights and neon signs. The maps makes you want to take an evening stroll through Chinatown but there is a sniper in almost every window. Much detail was added the fruit stands you can shoot the watermelons and potatoes. The streets are well designed and inside the buildings are detailed stores, shops, Laundromat and video store. I was a little disappointed not to find a local deli with chickens hanging in the window.
Broadcast is a large map featured in a TV studio. Much detail was paid expansive offices and the bright colors are awesome. The boardroom even has a colorful floral arrangement on the table. Television monitors line the walls and when shot they explode and through sparks. The map expands to a large parking lot with outer buildings that offer great sniping spots into the main lobby.
Killhouse offers tight quarters set in a warehouse. This is a small map for tactical teams and cage matches. Plywood walls offer no protection from the flying bullets.

At this point, the game is considered over and you will tally up all of the points in each player's hand. Any tiles left in the hand of any players will be subtracted from their final score and added to the score of the player to first use all of their tiles. Once you calculate the final scores of all players, the winner is declared. As is demonstrated, the winner is not the first person to simply use all of their tiles, although this can provide a great advantage. The player who chose the best tiles and who figured out the best way to use them on the board is the one who wins, giving you the chance to determine your own fate in this exciting game.

When it comes to photovoltaic (PV) cells, Wall Street is concerned primarily with established companies employing traditional silicon-based technologies. However, record high oil prices based on genuine long-term supply worries has Wall Street increasing its interest in companies developing other PV technologies and materials, because at least for the immediate future, all types of PV technologies will thrive. This is despite the fact that the price of polysilicon, a key material used in traditional silicon-based solar cells and semiconductors, is expected to come down within the next six months. Lower polysilicon prices would seem to dampen interest in alternative non-silicon PV technologies because of their lower efficiencies in harnessing solar energy.
In fact, it is easy to foresee a segmented industry with a dual focus. One segment would focus on silicon-based photovoltaics using rigid, bulky solar panels primarily in large-scale applications such as producing power for utilities. A second segment would focus on low-cost technologies based on nanomaterials and conductive polymers to provide flexible PV products for buildings with better efficiencies and aesthetics.
Silicon-based Photovoltaics
The generally higher efficiencies (12-22 percent) of rigid solar cells based on silicon technology have made silicon the photovoltaic of choice despite its relatively high manufacturing costs. One way to bring down cost is through a modified manufacturing process called silicon ribbon growth that reduces the number of processing steps to six from the nine used in conventional bulk silicon growth based on ingot technology. Evergreen Solar (www.evergreensolar.com), a recognized leader in the field, has been developing interesting manufacturing processes using ribbon silicon technology.
Regardless of whether silicon solar cells are based on ingot or ribbon growth manufacturing technologies, however, increasing energy conversion efficiency will always be an issue. One way to attain greater efficiency is to increase solar cells' spectral sensitivity by using broader or different regions of solar radiation, by better matching the solar emission and producing higher absorption coefficients, and by using a higher fraction of sunlight that eliminates losses through excessive heating of the silicon cell. For example, a 2004 patent, "High Efficient PN Junction Solar Cell" (US6696739B2) describes a solar cell showing improved energy conversion efficiency by minimizing the shading loss while reducing the manufacturing costs.
Still another way of lowering cost is through the technique of concentrated photovoltaics. Passive optical elements are used to concentrate sunlight onto photovoltaic cells resulting in more energy output while using fewer PV cells.
Thin Films and Plastic or Polymer-based Photovoltaics
The first generation PV cells, developed in the 1970s, used monocrystalline or polycrystalline silicon. These are the rigid panels most people think of whenever solar cells are mentioned. These PV cells are made of semiconductor wafers in glass and require complex manufacturing processes.
The second generation, developed in the '80s, is known as thin films. It still requires low-pressure, high-temperature film deposition and complex manufacturing processes. Cadmium telluride (CdTe) cells are the most successful technology of this generation because of their very high conversion efficiency combined with a bandgap that is very close to the theoretically calculated optimum value for solar cells under un-concentrated sunlight. This is also an ideal PV cell for use in concentrated photovoltaics.
The majority of these second-generation cells are placed on glass, so they remain rigid. However, Global Solar (www.globalsolar.com) announced in March 2008 that it has developed a proprietary process for manufacturing flexible thin-film copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) photovoltaic modules. While other companies produce CIGS on glass, Global Solar is thought to be the only company with CIGS on flexible materials. CIGS cells are deposited on a stainless steel backing which also makes them lightweight and durable.
Organic Solar Cells
Plastic or polymer-based photovoltaics, developed in the '90s, are considered third- generation solar cells. Also called organic solar cells, these cells use photoactive or photosensitive dyes and conducting polymers that can be manufactured at high speeds and low temperatures.
Manufacturing costs can be reduced as a result of using a low temperature process similar to printing instead of the high temperature vacuum deposition process typically used to produce the first and second generation cells. Reduced installation costs are achieved by producing flexible rolls instead of rigid crystalline panels.
Currently, third generation solar cells are not as efficient as the first- or second-generation cells, but their lower cost offsets this deficiency. In the long term, these materials should cost even less and, using quantum dots to decrease the bandgap of the base material, they should reach higher efficiency levels than conventional cells.
Efficiency Improvements Being Explored
University of Notre Dame researchers have shown that adding carbon nanotubes to a titanium dioxide film doubles the efficiency of converting ultraviolet light into electrons when compared with the performance of nanoparticles alone. (Titanium dioxide is a main ingredient in white paint.) Without the carbon nanotubes, electrons generated when light is absorbed by titanium dioxide particles have to jump from particle to particle to reach an electrode. Many never make it out to generate an electrical current. The carbon nanotubes provide a conduit for electrons for a more direct route to the electrode, improving solar cell efficiency.
Titanium dioxide, however, absorbs only ultraviolet light, leaving most of the visible spectrum of sunlight to be reflected rather than absorbed. In dye-sensitized solar cells, a one-molecule thick layer of light-absorbing dye is applied to the titanium dioxide nanoparticles to catch more of the spectrum. Another approach coats nanoparticles with quantum dots or nanocrystals, which act as tiny semiconductors. Unlike conventional materials in which one photon generates just one electron, quantum dots are able to convert high-energy photons into multiple electrons. Other ways of improving collection of electrons within a solar cell include forming titanium dioxide nanotubes or complex branching structures made of various semiconductors.
Emerging Leaders in Printed Photovoltaics
Konarka Technologies (www.konarka.com) recently announced the first demonstration of manufacturing solar cells by highly efficient inkjet printing. "Demonstrating the use of inkjet-printing technology as a fabrication tool for highly efficient solar cells and sensors with small area requirements is a major milestone," says Rick Hess, President and CEO at Konarka. "This essential breakthrough in the field of printed solar cells positions Konarka as an emerging leader in printed photovoltaics." Inkjet printing is commonly used for controlled applications of functional materials solutions in specific locations on a substrate (RFID tags, for example), and it can provide easy and fast deposition of polymer films over a large area. Another leader in organic or plastic solar cells (third generation PV) is Plextronics (http://www.plextronics.com), a company concentrating on printed electronics technology.
Konarka's Power Plastic technology is focused on delivering lightweight, flexible, scalable, and manufacturable products. The inkjet demonstration confirms that organic solar cells can be processed using printing technologies with little or no loss compared with clean-room semiconductor technologies, such as spin coating. Inkjet printing could become a smart tool to manufacture solar cells with multiple colors and patterns for lower-power requirement products, such as indoor or sensor applications.
According to Solar Cells Info (solarcellsinfo.com), by 2009 at the latest, Konarka plans to bring multiple forms of its product to market-everything from tiny cells for sensors to fabric-based (solar cells embedded in awnings, for example) and larger building panels. The process involves printing or coating nanoparticles such as quantum dots or nanocrystals onto other material. Hess says Konarka is currently working with U.S. Green Building Council LEED designers on custom installations.
Final Thoughts
On the environmental side, it is estimated that compared to fossil fuel electricity generation, each kW of installed solar PV power annually saves up to 25 kg (55 lbs) of nitrogen & sulfur oxides, and offsets 600 to 2300 kg (1300 to 5100 lbs) of carbon dioxide, depending on the fuel mix and solar insolation (Incident solar radiation). It is worth noting that only a few years ago, while oil prices were relatively low, the growth of interest in PV technologies was based mostly on the environmental concerns rather than the concern on exhaustion of fossil fuel reserves and the recent higher oil prices. It is now clear that the dual focus of PV technologies along with improving the efficiency and reducing costs of the various PV systems will ensure sustained growth in this industry.
